What is Pet Rehab?

Veterinary Rehabilitation is an emerging field of veterinary medicine and involves the use of a number of different modalities to help reduce pain,
restore normal movement, improve circulation, promote tissue repair, increase fitness & balance and to assist with weight loss.

Much of the focus is on soft tissue and working with the tissue around bones and joints to optimise movement.

Is it Painful?

The first aim of a Rehab program is to reduce pain and to challenge the patient only within their comfortable limits.
A rehab plan is designed to create positive changes in mobility, balance & fitness.  Each plan works within each patients current ability and ensures a pain free experience.

What can Rehab help with?

Rehab can help with any condition which has changed the way your pet is moving.
This can include:

  • Orthopaedic injuries

  • Spinal injuries

  • Neurological conditions

  • Chronic pain conditions, e.g. arthritis

  • Loss of fitness & muscle conditioning during any long term illness

  • Weight loss.

What happens during a visit?

On your pets first visit, our specially trained veterinarians will perform a thorough physical examination.  Our vets will also use clinical information provided by your regular veterinarian as well as any specific concerns that you have.  With all of this information, they will determine the areas of the body which require attention.
Our vets are able to develop a personalised treatment plan for your pet to ensure the best possible return to mobility and the daily activities that help put the play back in their day.

Each patients treatment on the day may include any number of the following treatments:

  • Massage

  • Stretching

  • Joint mobilisation

  • Acupuncture

  • Balance training

  • Muscle conditioning

  • Core strengthening

  • Hydrotherapy

How regular are the treatments?

It is important to have regular Rehab check-ups to ensure your pets return to function as soon as possible.  Initially this may be every week or in severe cases more than once a week.  As treatment progresses, these visits become less frequent.

In most cases, you will be provided with a home Rehab program designed specifically for your pets needs and the amount of time that you have available to do these exercises.  Often these are designed to fit into your daily routine to minimise the additional time taken.  These at-home treatments are designed to continue your pets progress at home and will be adjusted according to how well your pet is improving.

How do I know if it is working?

There are several measures that we use at Rebound to make sure your pet is improving.  First and foremost is how they are behaving at home and whether they are able to meet the goals set by yourself and our vets.  We also measure other parameters such as the exact range of motion of the joints (goniometry) and muscle mass.  These allow a measurable, scientific monitoring of results.

Do I need a referral?

At Rebound, we are committed to a ‘One Health’ philosophy.

The treatments we provide are designed to speed up recovery and to enhance the results that you are already witnessing with your pet.

Whilst a referral from your regular veterinarian is not required, it is preferred.  This ensures that we are aware of all of your pets medical and surgical history.  It also allows us to keep your regular veterinarian informed on the treatments your pet is receiving as well as their process.
